Lawn Care and Maintenance in St. Augustine, FL

Weekly and bi-weekly lawn care built for St. Augustine's sandy coastal soil, salt air, and St. Johns County's watering rules — not a routine written for someone else's climate.

Dreamscapes provides professional lawn maintenance in St. Augustine, from smaller in-town lots in the historic district to newer communities like Palencia and Cordova Palms. Most lawns here are St. Augustine grass — yes, the grass shares its name with the city — growing in sandy, coastal soil that behaves differently than the clay lawns most national lawn care guides are written for. We adjust mowing height, fertilizer timing, and irrigation checks to match how grass actually grows this close to the Atlantic, not generic advice written for a different climate.

St. Augustine Grass in St. Augustine, FL: A Name That Actually Matters

Same Name, Same Coastline

Most lawns in St. Augustine are planted in St. Augustine grass, and that is not a coincidence — the cultivar was first widely planted in this exact city and was bred for a coastal, sandy, salt-exposed climate like this one. But sharing a name does not mean generic “St. Augustine grass care” articles written for a homeowner in Texas or the Florida Panhandle apply here. Properties near Anastasia Island, Vilano Beach, and the Matanzas Bay deal with salt spray and wind that inland Florida lawns never see, and sandy soil this close to the coast drains fast and holds almost no nutrients on its own. We build every maintenance plan around the grass and the coastline it is actually growing on, not a national playbook.

Lawn Care Around St. Johns County's Watering Rules and Fertilizer Blackout

Current Watering Restrictions in St. Johns County

St. Johns County falls under the St. Johns River Water Management District (SJRWMD), whose baseline rule allows two irrigation days a week in warmer months (Wednesday/Saturday for odd addresses, Thursday/Sunday for even addresses) and drops to one day a week in winter. Since May 2026, SJRWMD has had a Phase III Extreme Water Shortage Declaration in effect for St. Johns County due to drought, cutting irrigation to one day a week with no watering between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Drought status changes, so we check current restrictions before setting or resetting a client’s controller.

Summer Fertilizer Blackout (June 1 – September 30): St. Johns County’s fertilizer ordinance restricts fertilizers containing nitrogen and phosphorus during the summer rainy season to keep runoff out of the Matanzas River and Intracoastal Waterway. A properly timed application before June 1st carries St. Augustine grass through the blackout, and we resume feeding once it lifts on October 1st. You can check current statewide fertilizer ordinances at the UF/IFAS Fertilizer Ordinance lookup tool.

Frequently Asked Questions

Coincidence in name only, not in fit. St. Augustine grass gets its name from the city because it was one of the first places the cultivar was widely planted, and it remains the dominant lawn grass in St. Johns County today because it tolerates the area’s heat, humidity, and salt exposure better than most alternatives.

St. Augustine grass typically needs weekly mowing during peak growing season (roughly March through October) and can shift to bi-weekly in cooler months when growth slows. Shaded historic district lots under oak canopy often need less frequent mowing than full-sun yards.

SJRWMD’s baseline rule allows two watering days a week in warmer months and one day a week in winter, but a Phase III Extreme Water Shortage Declaration has limited irrigation to one day a week with no watering between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. since May 2026. Check sjrwmd.com for current status before adjusting your system, since drought declarations change.

Outside the summer fertilizer blackout (June 1 through September 30), spring and fall are the best windows. St. Johns County’s fertilizer ordinance restricts nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer during the summer rainy season to protect the Matanzas River and Intracoastal Waterway.

Salt spray and wind near Anastasia Island, Vilano Beach, and the Matanzas Bay can cause browning on the side of a lawn facing the water. Regular irrigation checks and a properly timed feeding schedule help the grass recover faster between salt exposure events.
